Potential Dangers of Consuming Sugary Drinks

New research now suggests that sugary drinks may be linked to 180,000 deaths worldwide.

This is according to research presented at the American Heart Association conference.  “This means about one in every 100 deaths from obesity-related diseases is caused by drinking sugary beverages,” says study author Gitanjali Singh, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health.  Among the world’s largest countries, Mexico has the highest death rates from sugary drinks.   The U. S. ranked third.

  • Sugar-sweetened beverages may be linked to about 180,000 deaths in the world each year.
  • Countries in the Caribbean/Latin America had among the highest death rates from diabetes due to consumption of sugary beverages.
  • About 25,000 deaths in the United States each year may be associated with sugar-sweetened drinks.
  • The American Heart Association recommends adults consume no more than 450 calories per week  from sugar-sweetened beverages, based on a 2,000 calorie diet.
