There are loads of yummy ingredients out there that you can add to your Vi-Shape® Shake to boost its nutritional benefits. But it can be difficult to sort out what’s truly good for you versus those sneaky ingredients harboring added sugars and more. Here are three ingredients to avoid at all costs when blending your daily Vi-Shape Shake.
#1—Ditch the ice cream and sherbet.
You might be surprised that many smoothie shops add low- or nonfat ice cream or sherbet to shakes. But these sweet treats are just that and are meant for special occasions. Even low- and nonfat varieties pack loads of sugar—up to 28 grams or more. And sherbet is not to be confused with sorbet. Sherbet contains between one and three percent milkfat from milk or cream, or another fat, making it a close cousin to ice cream (3%+ milkfat) whereas sorbets are also referred to as ices or granitas and don’t contain dairy. Bottom line? Steer clear of frozen desserts when mixing up your Vi-Shape Shake and avoid the sugar rush.
#2—Kick canned fruit to the curb.
Opt for fresh or unsweetened frozen fruit as much as possible. You’ll get maximum taste, fiber, vitamins and minerals. Canned fruit is often swimming in syrup, which contains added sugar and calories. If you have to have canned pineapple during the off season go for it, but choose canned fruit packaged in its own juice or in water.
#3—Get rid of flavored yogurt.
It’s tempting, we know, but choose wisely when it comes to adding substance and flavor to your Vi-Shape Shake. Many fruit flavored yogurts or yogurts with fruit on the bottom contain as much as 24 grams of sugar or more. Your best bet is to stick with fat free, plain Greek yogurt, which is high in protein (up to 20 grams!) and beneficial nutrients like vitamin B12, lower in carbohydrates and sugar and thick and creamy in texture. Most brands of yogurt also contain probiotics, the good-for-you bacteria that live in your digestive tract and help combat microorganisms that can cause intestinal infections.
